About Champions Hockey League
Entering the 2024-25 season, the Champions Hockey League will celebrate its 10th anniversary as Europe's leading ice hockey league, while the tight schedule and the rivalries between teams (and countries) ensure that the competition will remain as fierce as ever.
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), which is the governing body of the competition, has actually established the Champions Hockey League in 2008, but it was folded after just one year of existence due to financial hardships. A second try was made in 2013, as the 2014-15 season was its first. The teams came from the countries of the six founding national federations: Swedish Hockey League, Finnish Liiga, Swiss National League A, Czech Extraliga, German DEL and Austrian/international EBEL). In that campaign, there were 44 clubs participating, representing 12 European Countries. That season's champion was Luleå HF from Sweeden.
Along the last decade, the Champions Hockey league knew some modifications, as the number of teams has decreased and then increased again.
Going into the 2024-25 season, after yet another format change, will be 24 teams competing for the cup – last season's champion, 18 teams from the six founding leagues (three teams per country), in addition to five wild card teams from various European leagues. For the 2024-25 season, those will be the national champions of Denmark, France, Norway, Poland and the United Kingdom. The regular league season will take place in September and October 2024, playoffs will be played during November, December 2024 and January 2025 and the final series will be played during February 2025.

EC Red Bull Salzburg (Austria), Färjestad BK (Sweeden), HC Fribourg-Gottéron (Switzerland), Fischtown Pinguins (Germany), Ilves (Finland), HC Dynamo Pardubice (Czech Republic).
Pot c:
EC KAC (Austria), Växjö Lakers (Sweeden), Lausanne HC (Switzerland), Straubing Tigers (Germany), Lahti Pelicans (Finland), HC Sparta Praha (Czech Republic).
Pot D:
Fehérvár AV19 (Hungary), Sheffield Steelers (United Kingdom), Dragons de Rouen (France), Storhamar Hockey (Norway), SønderjyskE Ishockey (Denmark), TH Unia Oświęcim (Poland).
Up to date, Frölunda HC from Sweeden has won the Champions Hockey League a record four times, the last at the 2019-20 season. The 2023-24 Champions Hockey League champion is Genève-Servette Hockey Club from Switzerland. It was the team's first Champions League cup, called the European Trophy.
